Cataract Surgery: Risks and Benefits

Who gets cataracts?

If you live long enough, you will get cataracts. The average age is 55-65. This is a fact of life, then but instead of despairing, you should read on and learn about the benefits of cataract surgery and how it can clear up your eyes and even restore your young vision. So much so that today many people that did not yet develop cataracts pursue a very similar operation called clear lens exchange (the same surgery as cataract surgery, except the lens is clear rather than cloudy), not in order to cure cataracts, but to regain their functional young vision. Dr. Ilan Cohen has been at the forefront of cataract surgery for more than 20 years. He has been trusted by his colleagues and other doctors with their eyes.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens in your eye. This condition is most commonly the result of aging and will happen to almost everyone. The age at which it occurs can vary greatly and depends on many other health factors.

What are the Sympotms of Cataracts?

Cataracts can cause blurry vision, glare, reduction in the sharpness of colors and images, and double vision. They can cause your glasses prescription to fluctuate rapidly. The only solution is cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery means the removal of your natural lens and exchanging it with a lens implant. What most people don’t know is that cataract surgery is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fix your vision for good. It is an opportunity not only for fixing your vision but also for potentially restoring youthful vision.

Dr. Ilan Cohen Has Performed Over 80,000 Vision Correction Procedures.

Dr. Cohen is a fellowship-trained cornea specialist and has devoted his career to fine-tuning and perfecting surgical techniques that can change your vision and your life. This is perhaps the reason that more than 1,000 physicians have chosen him for the correction of their own vision.

How is Cataract Surgery Performed?

Cataract surgery means the removal of your eyes’ natural cloudy lens and replacing it with a lens implant.

Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery: Cataract surgery can be done using a laser, or the old-fashioned way with a blade. Due to certain advantages of the laser, more people are leaning towards this kind of surgery in search of a more reproducible system for safe cataract removal. The laser can also help with reducing astigmatism and improving unaided vision in many patients.

Choosing the Right Surgeon

Cataract surgery is done only once in your lifetime. The outcome of this surgery will determine the quality of your vision for the rest of your life. Naturally, choosing a skilled surgeon remains a critical part of obtaining your sharpest vision in a safe manner. In addition, the incidence of cataract surgeries that are considered complex is on the rise. This is due to many factors including some commonly prescribed oral medications that can interact with the eye. Some complex cataracts may duplicate signs that less experienced surgeons may overlook.

Dr. Cohen has more than 20 years of experience managing a wide range of cataract types from the simple to the very complex.

At the CEI we have some of the latest medical technologies and our aim is to provide you with the safest diagnostic and treatment modalities for your unique eyes. Our aim is the sharpest vision and our methods the safest.

Multifocal Lenses Implants

After the cloudy lens is removed a lens implant must be placed. The type of implant used will determine the level of functionality of the eye for near, intermediate, and distance vision. Old-fashioned, monofocal lens implants have been around for a long time. Patients who choose multifocal lens implants can often drive, read and look at their phones without any need for glasses most of the time.

Cataract Surgery and Near Vision

Sometime after the age of 45, we all lose our near vision and become dependent on reading glasses or bifocals for reading and computer. Cataract surgery is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fix this issue and reverse the clock. Using advanced lens options like Multi Focal or Extended Range Lenses we can now restore what you lost years ago.

For the last 25 years, Dr. Cohen has devoted his career to the fine-tuning and perfection of cataract surgery.

Many ophthalmologists refer their own cases that are considered complex to Dr. Cohen due to his stellar track record and experience with such matters.

The Fear Factor:

Some patients delay cataract surgery because of fear. This approach often backfires in a bad way when they are eventually forced to remove the cataract because of a very bad vision. In such cases, the surgery could become significantly more traumatic and risky. Many of them often are referred to Dr. Cohen by other ophthalmologists as complex cases after years of waiting have pushed the surgery into the high-risk category.
Why lose precious time & suffer with less than optimal vision?

I Have Cataracts, Can I Just Wait?

The answer depends on many factors: the degree of your cataracts, your general medical health, the complexity of the potential cataract surgery, and some other complex issues. In general, waiting a few months will rarely have an adverse effect on the outcome. But in certain cases, where the cataract surgery is relatively complex, surgery could become more risky and traumatic as time progresses. Also, life is short and the effects of cataract surgery on the quality of your life may be significant. Why lose precious time and suffer with less than optimal vision?

Complex Cataract Surgeries

A Complex cataract surgery simply means two things:

What makes a cataract surgery complex?

Small pupils, dense cataracts, white cataracts, small eyes, loose zonules (support structures holding the natural lens), history of prior retinal surgery, history of complicated surgery in the other eye, and many other anatomical and medical factors. Dr. Cohen has performed thousands of complex cataract surgeries referred by other ophthalmologists who are familiar with his work.

Risks of Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery has risks. These risks depend on the degree of your cataracts, the anatomy of your eyes, the use of some oral medications, and perhaps most importantly the surgical skill, experience, and technology used by the surgeon. The risks include but are not limited to:
Although this list can discourage many from pursuing cataract surgery. You may be relieved to know that the incidence of these complications combined is relatively low. Moreover, our long-term internal study over the last 10 years shows that Dr. Cohen’s complication rates are 10 times lower than the national average.

Cataract Surgery and Astigmatism

Some patients have high degrees of corneal astigmatism. This condition could be addressed effectively during cataract surgery by using a Astigmatism-correcting Lens.

Dr. Cohen will talk to you about the benefits of using a astigmatism-correcting lens implant if relevant during your comprehensive eye exam.
