What Is LuxSmart?

LuxSmart is a new generation of extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses created by Bausch + Lomb. It is designed to improve vision at multiple distances while maintaining a natural, comfortable visual experience similar to that of a monofocal lens. Instead of using rings to split light, LuxSmart features a smooth optical surface known as Pure Refractive Optics (PRO). This design gently reshapes how light passes through the eye, helping you see clearly at both far and midrange distances while reducing bothersome glare and halos. Although LuxSmart™ is not yet FDA approved, its performance in international markets makes it a highly anticipated advancement for cataract and refractive lens surgery.

Benefits of LuxSmart

  • Ring-less design: Delivers clear, comfortable vision with minimal halos or glare, ideal for night driving.
  • Extended clarity: Provides sharp distance and seamless intermediate focus for daily activities.
  • Functional near: Allows easy reading of menus, phones, and screens.
  • Advanced optics: Combines 4th and 6th-order spherical aberrations to extend focus naturally.
  • Enhanced contrast: Maintains monofocal-like clarity for day and night vision.

What to Expect During LuxSmart Surgery

Once available, LuxSmart will be implanted as part of laser-assisted cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery. After numbing the eye, Dr. Cohen will remove the natural lens and replace it with the LuxSmart implant. The 20-minute outpatient procedure uses laser and image-guided precision to ensure ideal lens placement. Patients can typically rest briefly after surgery and return home the same day.

LuxSmart Recovery and Results

Patients typically notice clearer vision within one to two days, with full refinement over several weeks. The lens’s ring-less optic minimizes halos and glare while maintaining vivid color and contrast. Near vision is functional for most daily tasks, though small print may still require light readers. Follow-up visits ensure smooth healing and lasting results.

Alternative Premium Lens Options

If you prefer not to wait for LuxSmart, our current lens options provide excellent outcomes:

  • Vivity®: Ring-less EDOF ideal for patients prioritizing night comfort.
  • PanOptix® Pro: Trifocal for full-range vision, including near tasks.
  • enVista Envy: Trifocal with smooth transitions and excellent clarity across lighting conditions.

Each is selected according to your visual needs and lifestyle for the best possible outcome.

FAQs

Can LuxSmart correct astigmatism?

Yes. LuxSmart Toric models correct corneal astigmatism using the same Pure Refractive Optics design. The U.S. toric model will follow FDA clearance of the base lens.

What makes LuxSmart different from diffractive lenses?

Unlike diffractive lenses that split light, LuxSmart extends focus smoothly through its refractive design, reducing glare and halos for a monofocal-like night experience.

Will I still need glasses after LuxSmart surgery?

Most patients enjoy excellent distance and intermediate vision. Some may use light readers for fine print. We set expectations clearly before surgery.

Is LuxSmart available for refractive lens exchange?

Yes. Once approved, LuxSmart will be offered for both cataract and refractive lens exchange procedures.

Can I upgrade to LuxSmart in the future?

If you have cataract surgery now with another lens, future exchange may be possible. Dr. Cohen evaluates ocular anatomy and prior surgery to determine eligibility.

How does LuxSmart perform in low light?

LuxSmart aims to maintain high contrast and reduce glare, providing confident night vision comparable to a monofocal lens.

Is LuxSmart suitable for corneal irregularities?

Patients with stable or mild corneal irregularities may qualify. Dr. Cohen performs advanced corneal mapping to confirm candidacy and safety.

Will LuxSmart be covered by insurance?

As a premium elective lens, LuxSmart is typically not covered by insurance. Our team will review financing and coverage options during your visit.
