Each of us have imperfections in our eyes that contribute to the degradation of the image quality that our eyes can see. That is believed to be the main reason that most eyes are limited to 20/20 vision.
Contoura® is a type of topography-guided LASIK that is aimed at visual results that could be better than 20/20.
Prior to the LASIK procedure, the Contoura Topolyzer device first obtains a fingerprint-like image of the cornea. It then maps irregularities present on the cornea to each specific fine point on the cornea.
This is different to traditional LASIK, which treats the eye based on a prescription measurement alone. This point-to-point map data along with the patient’s prescription produces visual results that are significantly more accurate than the prescription data alone. In fact, topography-guided treatments are often used to improve vision in patients that have visual limitations due to problems like corneal scarring, irregular astigmatism, and other eye issues where solutions like glasses are ineffective.
Multicenter clinical trials show that other than just the visual acuity, Contoura® improved the quality of vision in patients. This means that not only the sharpness improved but there were fewer complaints of visual symptoms compared with glasses or contacts. In this study, 64.8% of patients achieved visions of 20/16 or 20/12.5 (the lesser the denominator the better the vision. For example, 20/12.5 is 60% sharper than 20/20).
Your eyesight is invaluable. It enriches your life in innumerable ways and gives you freedoms that you don’t want to miss out on. And because eyesight is such a precious possession, private equities and other corporate entities have started to take notice of LASIK. Not necessarily with the health of the patient in mind but instead with a keen intent of maximising profit.
In the New York and New Jersey area alone, many of these corporations have purchased or set up practices with the intent of maximising profit through reducing costs and winning market share. But not while being led by ethical patient care principles but rather by false efficiency and cutting costs and corners such as:
